I miss barbecue.

Whatever the world may call it.... anticuchos, kebab, souvlaki, kalamaki, satay, brochette, yakitori.... and though the word may take to mean either the process or the finished product (and sometimes a party in the garden under the heat of the summer sun), barbecue will always mean to me those thin slices of lean meat in bamboo sticks, cooked above coco charcoal in the streets fronting Tagbilaran.... the infamous Sky is the Limit.

Sky is the Limit for me, is home to the 2 peso pork barbecue, the 3 peso grilled chorizzo, eaten with the 2 peices of 1 peso "puso" (hanging rice as they call it). Its the source of a poor student's meal at night time (they open from around 6 in the evening to dawn) and an unfailing rescue when one doesn't have the time or the strength to cook after a tiring day.

I went home last June and apparently, a lot has changed in Tagbilaran even in just a year. When the Philippine Institute of Development Studies wrote some five to ten years back about tourism fueling the growth of a city, I honestly did not believe it then, and I still have doubts about it even now. But believers and doubters alike will agree that much has changed in the city in years.....and that includes the migration of Sky is the Limit from one part to the other.

I went around, noticed a stretch of barbecue stands in one place, and then another. I ended up buying the usual pork barbecue and grilled chorizo in Nang Mary's place near the old barracks. What used to be a single trip now becomes multiple, and what was then at the center was scattered all over the place.

But Sky is the Limit still exists, in different forms, and in the grandeur of its stubborn persistence. A friend of mine said that as long as there is poverty, they will continue to thrive. On the other hand, however, I think that as long as there are those who miss the scent of barbecue on a dark, lonely night, Sky is the Limit will never become only just a memory.

nice post miko. i miss the 2-peso "cellophane" thin barbecue too. i remember years back (that would be between 1990 to 1994), we used to eat full dinner at the "sky is the limit" with softdrinks at that, for about P18 only. unbelievable but true. :)

last time i checked, the 2-peso "cellophane" thin bbq is now the 3-peso "even thinner" bbq. the "puso" that you used to know is now the size of a jackstone ball. times have changed even in this paradise called Bohol.....

Time flies indeed, bisan diri sa slow-paced Bohol. Murag kanus-a lang nga didto ka sa amo wedding sa likod sa Dauis Church, noh?

No doubt it was the highlight of our vacation in Bohol. Last December 30, we trooped from the mountains of Sudlon, Alicia, Bohol, where my wife hails, to the enchanting white sands of Candabong, Anda, a nearby town, for a cool Rizal Day splash. A pilgrimage to the Baclayon Church

Sometimes, when we are too close to something, we fail to see its beauty. This is probably the reason why there are still many Boholanos, especially those living at the coastal areas, who have yet to visit the viewing deck of the Chocolate Hills in Carmen, Bohol, or even the new one in Sagbayan, Bohol. Because we know it is just nearby, we sort of miss out on how extraordinary the thing is. It is exactly the same with the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Baclayon, Bohol, the second oldest stone Church in the Philippines. I don't think many really appreciate its place in the history of our country. Baclayon is a municipality which is 6 kilometers east of Tagbilaran City. It is Bohol's oldest municipality and the mother of 3 other municipalities, namely, Alburquerqe, Balilihan and Sikatuna. In Cebuano, "baclayon" means the distance that one needs to walk. They say that the island of Bohol sinks about an inch in May due to the thousands of Bol-anons who come home to attend the many town and barrio fiestas celebrated during the month. You can almost feel this once you disembark from those overloaded ships docking at the Tagbilaran Port in May.
