I can't believe my last post in this blog was in May of 2009. I think that was the last time I was able to go home to our beloved province. Long time. Well, I resolve to make this blog active again in 2011. To begin with, I have registered the domain www.bol-anon.net for this blog, still about Bohol and the journeying Boholanos around the world. I have a lot of things in my mind. So, I hope you drop by once in a while. God bless.

On November 7, there will be a groundbreaking of the President Carlos P. Garcia Pilipino Muna monument to be erected at the Carlos P. Garcia Avenue, formerly known as C5. The Governor of Bohol, Erico Aumentado, and the three members of the House of Representatives of the province, together with MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando and Mayor Freddie Tinga of Taguig, will officiate the groundbreaking. The monument will be a tribute to the 8th president of our republic and an expression of gratitude for his noble contributions to our society, especially the Filipino-first policy. The event comes a few days after we commemorated the former president's birthday yesterday, November 4. Garcia, the only Boholano president and the most accomplished Boholano stateman ever, was born on November 4, 1896. Before we had the likes of Cesar Montano, Luke Mijares, Giselle Sanchez, no other Boholano had made such a big name in the entertainment industry than Yoyoy Villame. Who would not have heard and laughed at the songs like Magellan, Butse Kik, Philippine Geography and Mag-exercise Tayo Tuwing Umaga? His music earned him the title as the Philippine's "King of Novelty Songs". Born Roman Tesorio Villame on November 18, 1932, he was a native of Calape, a municipality north of Tagbilaran. It is said that he was at one time a jeepney driver here in Manila, at another time an army draftee, before he went back to Bohol to become a bus driver. In fact, I grew up hearing stories about him from common folks. According to them, Yoyoy used to be a driver of Bohol Land which for a long time was the only bus company operating in the province. I would like to tell you about one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Boholano icons of all time. Francisco Dagohoy led the longest revolt in Philippine history against the Spanish colonial government. This took place in Bohol from 1744 to 1829, roughly 85 years. Here are some less known facts/trivia about the man. His real name was Francisco Sendrijas and he was a native of Inabanga, Bohol. He was actually a cabeza de barangay or one of the barangay captains of the town. The name Dagohoy was derived from his local alias “dagon sa hoyohoy” translated in English as "amulet or charm of the gentle wind" that people believed he possessed. The Dagohoy revolt was triggered by the refusal of the Jesuit priest, Fr. Morales, to give a Christian burial to Sagarino, Dagohoy's brother, a constable who died in service while chasing a fugitive. The signal of the uprising was the killing of Father Giuseppe Lamberti, curate of Jagna on January 24, 1744. Shortly afterwards, Father Mor...

On my posts about the white beaches in Candabong, Anda, Bohol, someone commented (I think it was Amadeo) that we should not only be writing about the sights and wonders of Bohol, we should also write about its people, the Bol-anons. I could not agree more. Despite some bad incidents that you read in the newspapers once in a while, I truly believe that we, the people in and from the province. are really great friendly people. I'm sure that many people who have visited the province can attest to this. I got all the more convinced of this when I decided to scour YouTube for videos about Bohol and by Bol-anons. I loved what I saw, especially the videos on the famous Loboc Children's Choir which I have yet to see live. Really makes you proud to be Bol-anon. But I was struck by one video posted by Manuel Viloria of viloria.com . Where else do you get such warm welcome like this one by Mang Medik at one of the floating restaurants at the Loboc River in Loboc, Bohol. A familiar song ...

With some luck, I was able to convince two distinguished lawyers to join us in this Bol-anon blog. Atty. Handel Lagunay is a former editor of the University of Bohol's official student paper, the Varsitarian, and a graduate of Silliman University's school of law. He has agreed to join the group and to try to post once in while subject to his very busy schedule. :) Atty. Yvanne Cloma-Lucero , on the other hand, is a former colleage of ours at the Word, the official student publication of the Divine Word College of Tagbilaran, now Holy Name University, where she also finished her law studies. She too has expressed willingness to share her thoughts once in while in this blog. A warm welcome to both of them. With more and more people, we hope to see a better and more encompassing view of our province, its "real" beauty, and the goodness of its people. Pope Benedict XVI named a Boholano as the new bishop of the Diocese of Borongan, Eastern Samar. Fr. Crispin Varquez succeeds Bishop Leonardo Medroso who was assigned to the Diocese of Tagbilaran in October 2006. Fr. "Bay" Varquez, as he is fondly called by close friends, is the outgoing vicar general in the Borongan diocese and curate of St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Tagbilaran City, Bohol. He joins 8 other Boholano bishops, out of a total of 71 in the country, now in active service, and will be the 14th Boholano bishop ever. Fr. Bay's appointment was announced by the Vatican at noon Saturday, 11 August 2007, Rome time. It was announced simultaneously in Manila by Msgr. Wojciech Zalsuki, charge d’affaires of the apostolic nunciature. Fr. Bay was born in Sevilla, Bohol to Sinforiano Varquez and Justina Barrete. He studied elementary and high school in Sevilla, his Philosophy at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Taloto, Tagbilaran City, and Theology at St. Au...

Today is a new beginning for this blog. As original author, I have invited fellow Bol-anons to join me here and co-author/co-maintain www.bol-anon.blogspot.com . In particular, I invited Miko (a.ka. Michael Canares) and Fiel (a.ka. Fiel Angeli Araoarao Gabin) to help transform this blog into a community blog. Miko of course is our super-achiever friend all the way from college (Divine Word College of Tagbilaran now know as the Holy Name University) who is now taking masteral studies at the London School of Economics lang naman. He keeps a personal blog called Miko's World at Friendster. Fiel, on the other hand, is our number one "updater" on social and other events in Tagbilaran City and Bohol. It is understandble because she judges beauty pageants and emcees programs one after another there. I understand she works for the City Government of Tagbilaran, among many others.
